Fujikura Accelerates Optical Fiber Production to Power AI Data Center Boom

$1.9 billion investment aims to triple capacity and meet rising global demand for high-speed connectivity

Tokyo, Japan, 20 March 2026 – Fujikura  Ltd, a leading Japanese electrical equipment manufacturer, has announced plans to significantly expand its production of optical fiber and cables to support the rapid growth of AI data centers, particularly in the United States.

The company revealed that it intends to increase its production capacity by up to three times across its manufacturing facilities in Japan and the US. This expansion comes as demand for high-speed data transmission continues to rise, driven by the global push toward artificial intelligence and advanced digital infrastructure.

To support this growth, Fujikura plans to invest up to 300 billion yen, approximately $1.9 billion, while closely monitoring market trends. The investment will focus on scaling production of advanced optical fiber technologies, including Spider Web Ribbon and Wrapping Tube Cable systems, which are designed to handle large volumes of data efficiently.

The move follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the governments of Japan and the United States last year. Under this agreement, Fujikura will play a key role in supplying optical fiber cables to strengthen AI infrastructure in the US, highlighting the increasing collaboration between the two countries in technology development.

As part of its expansion strategy, Fujikura is also accelerating construction of a new manufacturing facility at its Sakura plant in Chiba prefecture. This facility will help boost production capacity and improve the company’s ability to meet growing global demand.

Fujikura, founded in 1885, has built a strong reputation in the development of power and telecommunications systems. Its product portfolio includes optical fiber devices such as cutters and splicers, which are essential tools for modern communication networks.

The company operates across multiple regions, including Japan, Asia, Europe, North America, and Africa, positioning it as a global player in the optical fiber and cable industry.

With AI data centers expanding rapidly, the need for reliable, high-speed connectivity has become more critical than ever. Fujikura’s investment reflects a broader industry trend where companies are scaling infrastructure to support next-generation technologies.

As digital transformation accelerates worldwide, optical fiber is emerging as the backbone of modern communication, enabling faster data transfer, improved network efficiency, and the seamless operation of AI-driven applications.
