Charting an Upgrade in the Financial Prospects of Broadband Equipment Market

Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, security, networks, and data center industries, has officially published results from a recently-concluded study.

Going by the available details, the stated study reveals that total global revenue for the Broadband Access equipment market has increased to $4.6 B in third-quarter 2024, marking a 1 percent incase Q/Q and 5 percent year-over-year (Y/Y).

Talk about the same on a slightly deeper level, we begin from how total PON equipment spending was up 6 percent from the third-quarter of 2023. This uptick, on its part, has been largely driven by an 11 percent increase in spending on PON ONTs. Thanks to that, the ONT shipments in North America also surpassed the 2 million mark for the first time since first-quarter of 2023.

Next up, we must dig into how the spending on DOCSIS infrastructure also jumped by 26 percent Y/Y. Here, Dell’Oro would go on to see significant spending increases for both Remote PHY Devices (RPDs) and Virtual CMTS (vCMTS) platforms.

Another detail worth a mention is rooted in the discovery that residential Wi-Fi Router shipments were relatively flat Y/Y. Markedly enough, this was despite a staggering 5935 percent increase in Wi-Fi 7 unit shipments, something which was orchestrated by lower-cost dual-band unit shipping in China.

Among other things, we ought to mention that Dell’Oro’s report expects a rebound in spending on Broadband Access Equipment. Having said so, service providers will continue to take a measured approach to their network expansions, as interest rates may remain relatively high for at least the first half of the year, pushing up the cost of capital.

“Fixed wireless providers in select markets continue to take the lion’s share of new broadband customers, with a wider range of pricing tiers designed to appeal to not only their mobile customers, but also to existing Cable, DSL, and Fiber subscribers,” said Jeff Heynen, Vice President with Dell’Oro Group. “As a result, Fixed Wireless CPE unit shipments posted their fifth consecutive quarter of Y/Y growth, increasing 19 percent,”

The Dell’Oro Group Broadband Access and Home Networking Quarterly Report basically provides a complete overview of the Broadband Access market. The metrics in play cover manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and port/unit shipments for Cable, DSL, and PON equipment.

Furthermore, the exercise would cover equipment like Converged Cable Access Platforms (CCAP) and Distributed Access Architectures (DAA); Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers ([DSLAMs] by technology VDSL, VDSL Profile 35b, and G.FAST); PON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), Cable, DSL, and PON CPE (Customer Premises Equipment); Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) CPE; and Residential WLAN Equipment, including Mesh Routers.

Founded in 1995, Dell’Oro Group’s rise up the ranks stems from specializing in conducting strategic analysis of components like telecommunications, security, enterprise networks, data center infrastructure, and network security markets.
